West of the Pecos

outside Fort Lancaster near SheffieldFolks this is a portal to our series of pages and features on West Texas. We are also covering parts of New Mexico and Northern Mexico. There are some relatively new links here that we have highlighted in red. Debbie and I have downloaded some of the new shots we took in Acuna in March of this year, 2007. We have also recently created a totaly new page featuring our home Sheffield, Texas with great images of the country within 20 miles of our home. Find that link below. We hope you like this and more is coming, much more, so check  back frequently. The image to the right is just outside the entrance to Fort Lancaster, State of Texas Historical Site. Fort Lancaster is not the best preserved of the Indian forts but it is a great place to picnic in April. Fort Lancaster was briefly occupied by the forces of the Confederacy during the Civil War. A better preserved fort can be found at Fort Davis near the town of that name. Have fun in West Texas. There is a world to explore and experience.

WELCOME TO SHEFFIELD

Headed to the Big Bend National Park, Alpine, the Marfa Lights and other adventures along US Hwy 90

If you travel from the east, say Houston or San Antonio, I highly recommend taking US HWY 90 through Del Rio. If you are headed to Big Bend National Park, Del Rio is the last stop for real groceries and supplies. Del Rio is also the gateway to Acuna Mexico and Lake Amistad. Traveling along Hwy 90 you will pass a Border Patrol checkpoint that is a few miles east of Comstock. Shortly after leaving Comstock (hint: there isn't much in Comstock) you will cross the Pecos River and then you will truly be west of the Pecos. Stop and take few shots off High Bridge. The Pecos is the major feeder to Lake Amistad.

A few miles later you must stop and visit Langtry, Texas. Stop by and check out the home and court of Judge Roy Bean, the Law West of the Pecos. Also
Seminole Canyon State Park is a good place to camp for the night on the way west. Seminole Canyon has some of the best preserved Indian pictographs in North America.

A little cowboy trivia that we don't think is trivial in Texas

"Cowboy's Ten Commandments
(posted at the Cross Trails Church in Fairlie, Texas)

1)  Just one God!  2)  Honor yer Ma and Pa. 3)  No tellin tales or gossipin'. 4) Git yourself to Sunday meeting. 5) Put nothin' before God. 6) No foolin' around with another fellow's gal. 7) No killin' (with a few exceptions) 8) Watch yer mouth. 9) Don't take what ain't yers. 10) Don't be hankerin' for yer buddy's stuff."

Big Bend Open Road Race - Fort Stockton & Marathon Texas

Held in April and October since 1998 the Big Bend Open Road Race is a hugely successful event for Fort Stockton Texas. Fort Stockton is the county seat of Pecos County. The spring race just ended  The Big Bend Open Road Race, a 4-day happening,  is a rally-style competition involving five speed classes. The race is considered one of the most challenging of it's kind due to the rugged and varied terrain between Fort Stockton and Sanderson and also between the Pecos County seat and Marathon, the fall route. Drivers from all over America compete in this challenging race. Big Bend Open Road Race is a great economic boost for Pecos County.
