Crockett
County and Ozona Texas
We go to Ozona mainly to see our physician, Dr. Sims or
our vet, Dr. Vanoy. These fine individuals handle our family's medical
needs. We also use the Village Pharmacy, one of two in town. We also
just like Ozona. I use the barber if he is cutting hair on the
day I am in town.Ozona folks are laid back and friendly and have been ever since we first moved to Sheffield, forty something miles to the west. Ozona is the county seat and only town in Crockett County. These scenes on this page were all taken standing in the little park across from the Crockett County Courthouse, one of my favorite Texas courthouses. I just stood there, moved around a little and managed to snap some really good Ozona. Crockett County is on the western edge of the Edward's Plateau. Ozona is 82-miles southwest of San Angelo and about 50 something miles north of Comstock. Sonora is to the east and Sheffield and Fort Stockton are to the west. Interstate US Interstate -10 has three exits at Ozona. There are two grocery stores, a Dollar General, two pharmacies, several nice motels, places to eat (try the Hitchin Post) and a number of other businesses catering to ranching and oil field needs. Yes the county is named after David Crockett. He never
made it this far west, but his memory did, along with this
statue. Rumor has it that the citizens of Crockett County picked
up this William McEvey art for a song some time ago when another party
canceled their contract. We all like it around here. David's motto is
on the base saying, "Make sure you are right then go ahead."Ozona with a population around 5,000 has one school system. Each year they have an all class reunion. Debbie and I attended as vendors in 2005 and managed to sell out of Bar-B-Q before lunch really started. Ozona's "Deerfest", held in the fall, is one of the best attended in the western Edward's plateau. This statue represents the Crockett County
pioneers. My clerk at work, Mrs. Anita Cravens, is married to a
man who is a direct descendent of one of these early pioneers, W.P.
Hoover. The Hoovers settled along the Pecos River in 1881. In
1840 John Coffee Hays led a surveying party through the area to lay out
a stage coach road from San Antonio to El Paso. The US Army determined
that the settlers and travelers needed additional protection from the
Lipan Apache, Tonkawas, and Comanches. Therefore in 1855 Fort Lancaster
was established on Live Oak Creek in the western part of Crockett
County where the creek joins the Pecos River. The shot below
illustrates the streets and roads running through downtown Ozona. Ozona
may be small, but it is damned handy and we like it the way it is!![]() |
