Ciudad Acuna, Mexico
Ciudad
(city) Acuna across the Rio Grande from Del Rio, Texas is one
great destination for many reasons.. Acuna and Del
Rio are international sister cities and share Lake Amistad, a
premier fishing location and an international border. There are many
great places to see and
things to do on both sides of the border. Look for our upcoming article
on Del Rio and their world class rodeos.
We
love to visit Acuna several
times a year, most recently the second week in March of 2007. Drive
across or take a taxi for $10-$12
dollars. Acuna has great shopping with just about anything you can
imagine. Take a taxi if you stray too far, it is easy to get lost if
you haven't been there much. Check out the city Plaza. Acuna has
friendly citizens, really
great restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Just south of the
international bridge runs the main street of Hildago. There are three
good hotels within walking distance of the items described below. These
are the San Jorge, the San Antonio, and the Best Western. We always stay
at the Hotel San Jorge or St. George.
The
San Jorge is right next
door to the romantic and nostalgic Ma
Cosby's restruarant. The image to the left shows Hildago to the north
with Cosby's and the taxi stand and the Corona Club. The staff
and management at
the Jorge have been consistently friendly and helpful with just about
anything asked. Our San Jorge rooms
have been clean and air conditioned with hot showers and cable TV.
Debbie and
I are charged $35 per night. Rooms contain two double
beds or a king size bed. My favorite San Jorge Hotel feature is the
small, but scenic,
veranda (note above) overlooking Hildago Street. I like to sit there
and enjoy the
street action below and maybe get a bid on a shine. A really nice gift
shop is located directly underneath the San Jorge. You may drive up on
the sidewalk and the
staff will carry your bags to your room. To your right across the
street is the Corona Club
that
features live performances and dancing. The Corona Club is covered with
autographed tourist dollars and feature an antique
wooden bar, an outdoor patio area, a restaurant, and courteous
staff. The movie "Desperado" was partially filmed in the Corona
Club. Of
course, if you
want a choice of lodging, there is a Best Western and the San Antonio
within walking distance of the Acuna locations on Hildalgo Street
mentioned above.

This is one of many street vendors active on Hildago Street in Acuna
Mexico
When hungry in Acuna, you have a a wide selection from vendors, many
deli selections in various priced establishments, up to and including
world
famous Ma Cosby s. Ma's is worth a trip. Ma Cosby's features steaks,
Mexican
dishes, and the lake bass from Amistad. Ma Cosby's was established in
1930 and is the sentimental favorite of many Texans.
We prefer Manuel's
two blocks north of the San Jorge
and to the right half a block. Manuels, like Ma Cosby's, is
totally old world with white
linen table cloths and the best margaritas in town. Service
and atmosphere are top notch. Manuel's menu features steaks, seafood
(try
the shrimp) and Mexican dishes. Two can eat like king and queen, Mike
can drink and we can both
and get in and out with tip for a twenty dollar bill. On our last
trip there was a
table of about 15 or so Mexican ladies having a very great
time. I suspect they were some business or civic group. When the
musicians came in and began playing, they began to have a very good
time indeed. We had the fried garlic butterfly shrimp. They were yummy.
Later I sent Mike out for ice cream before bedtime next door in the bar
at Manuel's.
Many US
citizens
visit Acuna due to the availability of doctors,
dentists, pharmacies, and optometrists. Medical fees are extremely
reasonable compared to those charged for comparable procedures in the
US. I get dental work for 10-15% of the cost in the US.This (to the
left) is yet another shot off my veranda, you notice I
claim the veranda at San Jorge. Rex Pharmacia is behind me although
they are a little high compared to other pharmacias. Whoops! I'm
not there. I must be at the dentist. We also like to stock up up on
medications like antibiotics. Again these are a great savings compared
to the price you pay in Texas. Many Americans go to Acuna just to save
money on prescriptions. These can
be legally brought back across the border if they are
prescribed to you by a physician. Remember to declare your purchases
when you cross back over and save your prescriptions. We go to Acuna
for fun as well as dental
work.
We saved
$500+ on this visit.
Doc and I have visited most of the border towns and believe Acuna is
the friendliest and definitely the one we feel safest in. The people
are friendly and warm hearted. Please remember you are in a different
country and act accordingly. Take your identification and no firearms
or ammunition. I love Acuna and I hate to leave.
