We value individualism and independence over political correctness and snobbishness. On the Texas Art and Culture pages we take the liberty of every Texan. Art and  culture are defined as we see them. Our Texas art and culture pages are currently closed for revision. These include updates on the Big Bend Open Road Race, Texas Motor Speedway, Terlingua Texas Chili Cook Off and lot of other fun things to do in Texas.
"Sun and wind and beat of sea. Great lands stretching endlessly. Where be the  bonds that bind the free. All the world was made for me!" ... Voltaire

OK, so Voltaire is a Frenchman, but his words express the fierce rugged independent spirit of Texans. At Do It In Texas we record personal travels and adventures in the great state of Texas.

Pecos River east of Sheffield in the wintertime.WEST OF THE PECOS

This is a portal page covering west Texas as well as parts of Northern Mexico and New Mexico. The image is of the Pecos River near Sheffield in the wintertime. By the way, Pecos is pronounced Pe' kas.  At West of the Pecos you will experience the wild Big Bend Region and the surrounding areas.  Experience the Davis Mountains.
This section also features Val Verde and Crockett counties, technically east of the Pecos. West of the Pecos covers the Permian Basin, El Paso, and east to San Angelo. Enjoy outdoor activities like camping and exploration in the Big Bend National Park. Visit historic sites like Fort Lancaster and Fort Davis. Debbie wrote our page on Acuna Mexico across from Del Rio. Acuna is, in our estimation, the nicest and safest border town in Mexico.

some more of the Texas story

Palo Duro Canyon from the rim near Amarillo TexasIn September of 2007 we traveled to Canyon Texas via a circuitous route. We went via by Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Roswell, New Mexico and the eastern plains of New Mexico on our way to the Texas Panhandle! Believe it or not, that is not the straighest route from Sheffield to the Panhandle. We bypassed Lamesa on the way north. These blooms were photographed in Palo Duro Canyon near Canyon and Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle. The Panhandle is a very different region of the state indeed.  After the serendipitous experience of being stuck at the New Mexico State Fair, our travel took us from Roswell northeast to Clovis, Portales, and on to Canyon Texas (near Amarillo. After two nights in Canyon, we returned south to the Permian Basin. On this trip we witnessed seemingly endless portions of the southern plains. I was very impressed with Herford Texas, Canyon Texas, including Palo Duro Canyon State Park, and Happy Texas. Look soon for pages celebrating the Texas Panhandle Region.

TEXAS HUNTING & FISHING

Whitetail deer live in all regions of Texas although whitetails are scarcer in the more arid parts of West Texas, especially the where Mule Deer predominate (i.e. the lower elevations of the Chihuahuan Desert). Although whitetails are numerous in the counties comprising the Edward's Plateau including Crockett Co., parts of Terrell County, and eastern Pecos County, they become less numerous to the south and west. I learned something researching this article. Whitetail deer and mule deer sometimes interbreed where their ranges overlap. For a little bit more about this see Texas Hunting and Fishing.
